Object of My Affection: Bubble Swing
When I first read about these indoor/outdoor swings over at housemartin, I was blown away. Not only are they made from recycled metal, but the designs manage to be both whimsical and modern, playful and elegant.
They're made by the UK design team Fletcher & Myburgh. I bet the solid metal swings like the ones above and below would look amazing next to pool or pond where the water would reflect beautifully on them.
In only somewhat related news, if you're in New York you might want to check out a couple of upcoming House & Garden eco-design events (part of NYC Design Week). On 10/17 there's the FutureFashion Show at ABC Carpet & Home, and on 10/20 and 10/21 there are a couple of free Eco-Chic Shopping Tours (also at ABC). Let me know if you go! I'd love to hear about them.

Bringing Sexy Back...in the Kitchen!
Dayum! These Green Wrapz aprons put a whole new spin on the word "saucy." I love the feminine, lingerie-inspired styles...these would definitely help inspire me to whip up something delightfully sinful (just in time for Valentine's Day!). And of course gotta love that they're made with SKAL-certified organic cotton (with hemp and silk trims). Yum!

Hound Hoodies for Your Pro-Planet Pup, Blueprint Folds
These have to be the cutest items I've seen in a long time. Among other fab, eco-friendly pet gear, Annie's Sweatshop on Etsy sells these adorable, handmade, reversible fleece coats made of recycled plastic! A perfect gift for the chilly pooch in your life.
Also, a very sad farewell to Blueprint, which reported today that the magazine is folding. Final issue will be Jan/Feb 2008. Sniff, sniff. Cue the megalomaniacal laughter of some domino editor surveying her newly expanded empire...

And the Hipsters Said, "Let There Be an Eco-Lounge."
TreeHugger recently posted an interview with Evangeline Dennie, the designer of Oulu, a new lounge in Brooklyn made with truckloads of eco-sensitive materials. The lounge's live facade blows me away, but rather than blither on about how close I am to hopping on a plane and descending upon Brooklyn in time for happy hour, I'll let the designer tell you about the lounge in her own words.
Evangeline Dennie (excerpted from TreeHugger): The design reconceptualizes space using forms inspired by the natural landscape of Oulu's namesake in Finland. The finished woodwork of the walls and seating took its cues from the patterns that emerge from the bark of a birch tree with thin panels of wood that peel away from the wall.
Evangeline Dennie (continued): The wood was harvested from forests certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. Almost all of the construction materials had high recycled content. Almost all the construction waste was recycled. The interior finishes had low-VOC [paint], including the silver milk-paint in the ceiling. The green wall was nearly everyone's favorite due to its aesthetic value. In my humble opinion, the green wall was a brilliant response to the industrial landscape of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It was clear that this would become a welcome addition to the neighborhood. And judging by the double-take from nearly every hipster that walks by, it is a success. The green wall helps combat global warming and filter air by absorbing and converting carbon dioxide to produce oxygen. Just 1.5 square meters of the grass-like vegetation produces enough oxygen in a year to supply one person's yearly oxygen intake needs. When translating that info to this project, Oulu's green wall will conceivably produce enough oxygen for 46 people a year!
(Oulu is located at 170 N. 4th Street in Brooklyn. Go check it out and let me know what you think!)

Finley's Nursery Tour: DIY and BIY (Buy It Yourself) Art!
If you'll be so kind as to turn around now, you'll see the other half of Finley's nursery. Oh, here we are. Using the leftover no-VOC Natura paint from the tree mural, I painted the two canvases above Finley's changing table. My favorite animals? Ponies and puppies. One of the many wonderful things about being a parent of a not-yet-talking child is that you get to make all of your favorite things be your baby's favorite things too. So far, so good. Finley loves her ponies and puppies paintings. No word yet on dance movies, flip flops, and vodka tonics.
Listen up! I can not take credit for anything about these paintings other than the fact that I am a decent forger. After spending weeks on the Avalisa website, drooling over the crisp, colorful, funky animal prints and lamenting the fact that I could not afford them, I finally studied a couple of the designs closely and then painted my own. You should not do this. You should buy from Avalisa. Seriously. Get over there now. (Then come back.)
I bought the lovely custom family tree print above from the talented Karen Yi's Almost Sunday Etsy shop. It's a steal at $38. Since my busted camera can't do the print justice, check out the sample print from her shop below. Super pretty, right?
The final piece of art in the room is the fab Finley ABC print from Jennifer Ramos of MadeByGirl.com. I majorly heart it.
This is where it lives:
Tomorrow? All the miscellaneous details! Pillow, rugs, and tables...oh my!
