One-A-Day: Colorado Avalanche

Thanks to PamSoine for this wonderful write-up on the Colorado Avalanche.

And while we hardly ever give out tens for hotness, she convinced us that the Avs could be one of the teams deserving of that number.

The Colorado Avalanche

During the 2011-2012 season the Avalanche were the youngest team in the NHL. If you didn’t know that statistic you must have missed every single Avs game because that stat was shoved down our throats pretty much non-stop. I believe it was part of some type of elaborate mind control trick to convince us that missing the playoffs wasn’t so devastating.

So yeah, about the playoffs, the Avs have made it to the playoffs once in the past four years. That’s right once in four years and it’s getting a little depressing. We were this close last season and it made for a bittersweet final home game knowing it was the last time we would see our beloved team on the ice until the fall. But at the end of the game when Young by Fun. blasted over the speakers and our team saluted the crowd, the mind control trick kicked in and everyone was happy and looking forward to next season with the youngest team in the NHL.

General Manager – Greg Sherman

Coach – Joe Sacco

Team Captain – Milan Hejduk

Hejduk gets special love because he was drafted by the Nordiques and has played his entire NHL career with the Avalanche, except during the lockout. Hejduk and Tim Thomas are the only two Nordiques draft picks still playing in the NHL, but I don’t really know if Timmy counts as a current player anymore so bonus points for Hejduk.

The only negative thing I’ll say about Hejduk is that he is skewing the youngest team in the NHL stat because he is 36 years old. I’m sure those mind control folks were really annoyed when he signed another one year contract.

Player everyone should love – Gabe Landeskog: @GabeLandeskog92

Move over Matt Duchene because Colorado has a new fan favorite.

Everybody already knows Landeskog is amazing. Come on, he won the Calder Freaking Trophy!! Check out his acceptance speech below and listen really closely for his Swedish accent. What, he doesn’t have one? Yeah, he is just that good.

In addition to being Rookie of the Year he is, without a doubt, the most interactive player with the fans. He actually got people excited about the NHL Awards, a feat on its own, by tweeting pictures trying on his suit and he letting us vote on what kind of tie he should wear. Then on the red carpet he saw a fan wearing a Landeskoging t-shirt (more about Landeskoging below) and took a pic with the kid and posted it on twitter from the red carpet.

He is such a fan favorite that he beat @Biznasty2point0 for his namesake award and won the Biznasty Trophy from Crimespree Hockey for having the best NHL twitter account. Check out the article here. Then he actually read the article and tweeted a thank you, awesome guy!

Calder Trophy, Biznasty Trophy…but wait, there is more! If you missed the Landeskoging craze then you better check out this link to get the skinny. He actually embraced the fad and had a twitter contest for the best Landeskoging pics.

And on top of all that, Gabe is a good sport. He took a lot of chirping from teammates and fans regarding his doppelganger who played Cato in the Hunger Games movie. But it was all in good fun and Gabe played along with the jokes. But seriously…they really do look a lot alike and I think that is worth some bonus points.

Player we don’t love - We don’t have any huge jerks on the team or anybody who is really terrible. Everyone is loved.

Who they got during the off season - P.A. Parenteau, Islanders (@PAParenteau) John Mitchell, Rangers (@mitchabov) & Greg Zanon, Bruins. Also, Bryan Lerg (@BLerg11) Sean Sullivan (@SeanSullivan37) & Geoff Walker (@GWalker74) all from the AHL, Thomas Pock from Swedish Elite League & Bill Thomas from AHL/Panthers. Show them some twitter love!

Who they lost during the off season - Ryan Stoa, Peter Mueller (sob, still crying over Mueller)

Located at - Pepsi Center – Denver, Colorado

Hotness level - 10
We didn’t make it to the playoffs but we are rockin a solid 10 on the hotness scale. Now don’t freak out and disagree with me until you take a look at the pictures below. To be honest I could have just posted the numerous pictures of Varly which happen to be saved on my hard drive/phone/tablet but I wanted to break it down a little more for your enjoyment so I picked a few personal favorites.

Still need convincing that this team deserves a 10 on the hotness scale? Fine, here you go.

That’s right, we win.

Great job!

It's not even fair how beautiful Gabriel Landeskog is. Not. Even. Fair.

Fabulous work! The fact that we are young song was played is equal parts sad & hilarious. don't worry this team is way too talented to miss the playoffs again.

I always refer to the Avs as a boy band on skates because they're so pretty. So damn pretty.

Poor Duchene, yesterday everybody's teddy bear now he's been stuffed in the playbox and forgotten. Well I haven't forgotten Matt! I still love you! Forget the pretty boy and go and play your heart out!!!
Glad to see Zanon found a new home. I thought he was a great late season trade for the Bs last season. Good, solid d-man.
As for the perfect 10. Yeaaaa... First of all you didn't even mention Matt or Hunny in your reasons the team is hot, so minus 2 for you, but while there are some really hot guys on the team, the team as a whole is not a 10 (see Stastny, E. Johnson, McGinn & Mitchell). But that's me and (if you didn't know by now) I'm a Bruins/Pens/Cats/Hawks/Bolts/Stars..ok, let's just say I'm a fan of a lot of teams (Bruins #1 far & away). But absolutely not a fan of Habs, Canucks, Flyers, Caps, Kings & Rangers.
Anyway, I enjoy watching the Avs and I'd love to see them really do some damage in the playoffs.

Playoffs or no playoffs, Landeskog is a win in SO many ways. It's really great to see your nicely-written love for Hejduk too!

Awesome write-up! As an Oilers fan, I should not like the Avalanche, but they're a talented up and coming team much like the Oilers, so what's not to love? Hell, I love them fr Landeskog alone!!

Gabe. *sigh* And when Gabe and Skinny play each other it makes me insanely happy.

I love Matty Duchene. And unless it is totally fake he seems like such a nice guy. He is one of my fave players in the NHL.

@Shanny Boy band on skates! HA! Love it!

Thanks for the comments!
They are all so pretty...there are only 2-3 guys on the whole team who aren't hot, but I picked my favorite few. My heart belongs to Varlamov and I believe he's hot enough to carry a team of trolls to a 10 score. (Yes, I'm a bit crazy)
Don't worry Cat, we still adore Dutchy! It is just fun to have other players to gush over again.

This was a blast to write!
