One-A-Day: Boston Bruins

This write-up was sent to us by Cat and we can't thank her enough for helping us out with the Big Bad Bruins.

What a year they had.

Da Boston Bruins

Oh yea baby…

Where do I even start? This was a season like no other and not just because of the ending. We saw Tim Thomas not only regain the starter position, but set all kinds of records doing it.

Then we watched as a player who was brought in to be a 4th line grinder developed into a 2nd wing scoring threat – not to mention becoming one of the most annoying pests in the NHL right now (and we adore him for it - other teams, and their fans, like the Canadiens and Canucks may despise him, but we love our “Little Ball of Hate” – a nickname he picked up during the playoffs).

We were delighted to witness Looch break the 30 goal level, at the same time Bergeron became so vital to the team that losing him for just 2 games during the playoffs made fans break a sweat, and who can forget the mind-boggling, age-defying Recchi? I think his loss is going to really be felt very deeply this season. It seems almost impossible that he was only with the Bruins for 2 years. He arrived as a “veteran” player, but leaves an icon and hero.

While Ryder sometimes seems to sleep through parts of the regular season he turned it on in the playoffs and I don’t blame the Stars for making him an offer he couldn’t refuse (I will miss him terribly though – he was a mercurial, shy (or is it sly?), ginger with whom I played a cat & mouse game when it came to trying to get a photograph of his face [during warm-ups] – ah, good times…).

You have no idea how many pictures I had to take to get this one.
Ok, I’m sure it is obvious I could wax poetic about them for hours and hours (and pages and pages), but I will try to control myself. (not sure how long that will last, but I trust the girls to trim it back if I get completely out of control or, worse, boring)

So here is the breakdown

-&-

President – “Bam-Bam Cam” Neely

Only the Lightning can match the Bruins for having a Hall of Famer who has not only been so deeply influential in developing a team to compete at every level and at every position, but whose mere presence is intimidating.

General Manager – Peter Chiarelli

Don’t mess with Chia-pet.

Captain – The Big Z

And I do mean BIG!
(ok, maybe it was a little unfair to use a picture of him with St. Louis, but I couldn’t resist)

Players everyone should love:
While I think the answer should be “all of them” I somehow don’t think I’m going to sell you all on that so I’ll narrow it down to some of my favorites.

Gregory Campbell – 4th line center - the “throw in” for the Nathan Horton for Dennis Wideman trade. He is tough, fearless, talented and ridiculously under-rated. Plus Gregory is super sexy, single and has some seriously beautiful eyes.

Dennis Seidenberg – Top pair D-man. AKA “the guy who plays with Chara”. An insane workhorse on the blueline. While his regular season stats were very good and he matched his career highs in points and power-play points , it was in the playoffs that he took his play up several notches. In the post season alone he posted a league high 74 blocked shots and while he averaged just one second less of TOI (27:38) than Zdeno Chara he did so without any power-play time. Without him the Bruins don’t shut down the Sedins.

Did I mention he knows the art of the “Take Down” too?

Tim Thomas – Yoga junkie, Come-back King and Goalie extraordinaire. I’m not even going to take the time to recite his mind-boggling stats. I’m just going to show you my favorite reasons to love him.

Players we don’t love:
Ummmm……how about I just name a player other teams and fans don’t love (he’s one of the favorites in Boston though and has quickly developed a cult-like following) – I speak of course of Brad Marchand.

But how can’t you love a guy who will hit anyone anytime and chirps with the best of them?

Who they lost:
Mark Recchi (he who shall always be remembered only as a Bruin in Boston - I’m campaigning to get the Bs to hire him as a player developer), Michael Ryder (*sigh* I will miss his gingerness and spectacular/incredibly frustrating style of play – he will always be remembered for his glove save vs the Habs – a minor hero…of sorts), Tomas Kaberle (I know many in Boston were glad to see him go, but I didn’t think he was so bad, expectations were just set unreasonably high. Still I think he’ll fit in better with the Canes than Bs) and last, but not least, “Sheriff” Shane Hnidy (always a fan favorite and from what I’ve heard a great guy to have in the locker room, I will miss him too).

Who they gained:
Benoit Pouliot (I guess with the loss of Ryder the Bs felt they needed to fill their “former Hab” quota) and Joe Corvo (I’m tentatively excited about him. I think he could end up being a key player. Maybe.)
Keep an eye out for “farm boys” Jamie Arniel, Jordan Caron and Steven Kampfer. Kampfer in particular as he did a really good job playing D for 38 games. He may even start on the Bruins roster as the “7th” defenseman.

Where they play: TD Garden, Boston

Love the new look ;)

Hotness factor: 9.5 – there ain’t a dog among ‘em. And with guys like this I don’t want to hear any arguments.

@Cat - I give you snaps, in B formation, for this great write up.

No need to worry because, Michael Ryder is the Stars unicorn. We've been wishing, hoping, thinking, & praying for someone like him for a while now. There is no doubt we're going to take extra special care of him while he's in Big D.

&

If there's anything you can tell me about Mr. Ryder...special diet, favorite bedtime story, what TV shows he likes...that would be awesome ;o)

First of all--Cat, congratulations. As a long-suffering Hawks fan, I know the impossible glorious maddening mix of emotions a successful post-season can bring and even now I'm sure you're thinking "I just can't go through that again, for my health and sanity!" but you know (as I do) that as soon as there are glimmers of Again, you'll tap into the reserves. I did for a brief period last season altho' they had no biznatch being anywhere near the words play or off.

I became a huge Bruins fan over this summer--it was hard not to. Being a lady of elder years, to see Recchi and Timmy doin' it for the oldies and doing it SO well and with SO MUCH CLASS, especially in the final stretch was hella inspiring. The mix of experience and scrap and HEART was thrilling to watch and made me love hockey anew. Fantastic team, they kept their core since they didn't have a batshit crazy GM who must be a hit a strip clubs ("Oh, you're trying to get around the pole, eh? Here's 10 grand...") and they'll be contenders for quite a while. You can reference my posts around that time about their mentality versus the Other Team and get a vibe for where my head was at during that series.

And yes, cotDAMN that is one FINNNNNEEE lookin' team! I'll even give Chara a point for the fantastic smile he had on his face whilst hoisting the hardware.

Baby Ty Ty.....shudder. It's barely legal. And I'm barely guilty.

Great writeup.

I would personally deduct a million points for Chara's nude magazine spread as it scarred me for life but Milan Lucic gets like 10 million points by himself. I guess they cancel each other out.

Not a B's fan but I was definitely rooting for them for the cup. Like every other American gal I adore Tim Thomas. Ok maybe not EVERY other gal...but not liking Tim Thomas is a concept I cannot grasp.

I am also a lady of elder years (@jennifer I am not sure if I like how that sounds!) and was psyched for the Recching ball. Canes fans love the guy.

Now I am going to think about my jailbait boyfriend Milan *sigh* and Seids who thankfully is 30 and makes me feel less creepy.

p.s. Nathan Horton looks like a caveman (says quickly and runs from the blog)

Hmmmm I'm a Pens fan but I really like the B's, like 'em even more now....

@Shanny Thanks, in advance, for taking good care of my ginger. Ryds favorite treat is chocolate mousse cake, he eats pasta & chicken before games and sometimes sneaks in a little vanilla ice cream too. He loves playing golf & enjoys bowling. Not sure about his favorite bedtime story (sadly), but if you find out I'd love to know! ;)

@Jennifer I'm a big Blackhawks fan too (I have a friend in Montana who is a lifelong fan who sucked me in years ago) so, you're welcome & now I join you in your hatred of the Canucks. I'm afraid I'm not off the high quite yet & with most of the team coming back hope already abounds! Timmy is my greatest hockey love. I got into arguments last summer when it seemed like everyone wanted to trade him. Idiots. And Rex, what a man! I was insanely happy when he signed for one more year last year. When the playoffs came I desperately wanted the Cup for him.
It was so amazing to see Chara give it to him. I was tearing up over it.
And Seggy is going to be really dangerous in a couple of years - both on & off the ice. ;)

@Esbee While I wasn't scared for life I'm still not sure how I felt about that Chara photo. Great bod, but the face - er - it actually looks better when he's in full gear. lol
Rex was our Rock of Gibralter during the playoffs and Timmy had some of the best one-lines (eg response to Luongo's tire quip) and he's truly as All-American as a person can get.
Milan is the super hottie of the team (sorry peeps, but Seggy just isn't old enough yet) and I love Seids too! You have great taste in hockey players & men!

Thanks everyone for your notes. I really appreciate them!

@AussieGal my favorite team is the Bruins (obviously), but I'm also a big fan of both the Penguins & Blackhawks. I'm keeping my fingers tightly crossed for Sid. I don't want to rush him back, but I can't wait to see him on the ice again. I'm also very excited to see Geno on the ice again too, but I don't know how I can ever be prepared to see Max in an orange & black jersey. :(

AussieGal said...

@Cat I'm still in denial over Max in a Flyers jersey, dunno how I'm going to cope when the Pens play them :(

I don't think Sid will be playing anytime soon but Geno's raring to go so it won't be all doom amd gloom for them and have a look at this vid of Kris Letang working out, dude is a BEAST now:

I will always have a special place in my heart of hearts for the Bruins because THE GREATEST PLAYER IN THE HISTORY OF THE GAME & MY BESTEST MOST DREAMIEST BOYFRIEND EVER put them on the map. You know, that Bobby Orr guy. The guy with a statue in his honor that looks absolutely nothing like him in front of the TD Garden.

Because of Him, plus Mr. Neely. And Terry O'Reilly (who I met in the flesh). And Stan Jonathan. And Ray Bourque. And Don Cherry. I was glad they won the Cup but even gladder they beat the Canucks.

For me, the playoffs were all about Mr. Tim Thomas. Dominant doesn't even come close. Merriam-Webster announced today that they were going to recognize words like "OMG", "bromance" and "cougar" (not the pussycat kind, eh?), but I think they should have included a word that adequately describes what it means to Tim Thomas. Anyone?

LOVED the shot of Lurch looking down at Cousin Itt. Fun pictures all around, Cat. I'm not feelin' the 9.5 sauna temperature but I think it's just down to personal taste. You can't argue these guys have a certain something, and are generally beyond cut. I would have taken points away when Rex stepped down. He wasn't remotely cut and his hair is disappearing faster than Ugandan wetlands, but his raw swagger, confidence and sex appeal are what sealed the dealio for me. And his eyes. Good call on Campbell's eyes, btw. Maybe he'll catch a break now that Pops is finally out of the picture.

And what more is there to say about our Bob Seguin? Just think of all the fun posts and excited commentary that's in the pipeline over the next few years because of him. Enjoy him while you've got him, Boston. You got lucky, baby!

Love your writeup! This Stanley Cup run was completely exciting to watch and the Bs deserve every accolade they get for it...especially for making the Sedins look as dippy as the Doublemint Twins.
Nice touch with the Andrew Ference photo. Delicious!

I'm not going to lie, DAYUM the Bruins are fine. Apart from my guys, I'd go so far as to say overall team hotness is best in the league. Uh, Seguin is 19?! That body on a 19 year old??? Thank god I'm a hockey fan.

Again, not my team, there is no bandwagoning going on here - just shameless perving. Boston ladies, you lucky devils
