Detroit Red Wings

Recap of the 2009-2010 Season: The 2009-10 season was not very kind to the Red Wings fans. The injury bug bite us hard. The one game I attended this past season we had 7 regulars out of the line up. Several games during the season we were missing 9 regulars.

Miraculously we were healthy following the Olympic break. Managing to cruise into the playoffs, and sneak into fifth place in the Western Conference. After a nail biting 7 game series against the Coyotes, we lost in 5 games to the Sharks.

General Manager: Ken Holland

Coach: Mike Babcock

Team Captain: Nick Lidstrom

Players Everyone Should Love:
Nick Lidstrom: Called “The Perfect Human” by teammates, Nick is 40 years old now. He looked a little bit off at the beginning of the season but by the second half he had returned to form. He’s quite good looking for a man old enough to be my father.

Pavel Datsyuk: He can stick handle inside of a phone booth.

He’s finally starting to get more comfortable with his English. He’s actually done a commercial for the local Fox Sports station, and he is hilarious.

Tomas Holmstrom: Tomas Holmstrom is known around the league for driving goalies crazy. But we love him in Detroit, even though his skating is not that great.

Going into his 14th year with the team, Homer still mangles the English language all the time. His claim to fame on the team is speaking Swinglish. He’ll be asked a question in English, and respond in Swedish or respond in both languages together. Even his Swedish teammates don’t understand him half the time. All of his teammates tease him for his language issues forcing him to make speeches.

Jimmy Howard: I’m somewhat biased on this one. I watched Jimmy play in Grand Rapids the four previous seasons, and he was my favorite player. Coming into the season the coaching staff hoped Jimmy would start 30 games. After the first few games, most fans were hoping he would only start 3- the ones he’d already started. In November, after the first rash of injuries Jimmy took over, keeping us somewhat close to the rest of the West until the team was healthy. Jimmy ended up playing 63 games, and was nominated for the Calder.

Valterri Filppula: He dressed up as a pimp for Halloween while he was playing for Grand Rapids. And he’s gorgeous.

Patrick Eaves, Henrik Zetterberg and Mike Modano: They are all gorgeous.

Who We Don’t Love: I love them all, but if I have to choose
Derek Meech: He drives me crazy sometimes. He a defenseman that plays swingman. Some nights he’s a defenseman that makes stupid plays, and other nights he’s a forward that tries for a wrap around any time he gets a chance. And then occasionally he surprises me and plays well. I will probably always blame him as the reason we lost Kyle Quincey, because 2 years later I’m still bitter about losing him.

Todd Bertuzzi: Todd made a very stupid decision in the past. And is prone to taking dumb penalties. He looks like a thug in the video of what they look forward to during Christmas time.

And his poster is quite lovely as well “Kids N Wife”

Who We Got: Ruslan Salei, Jiri Hudler (he’s back from Russia a year early.) Mike Modano! Ilari Filppula, Valterri’s big brother.

Nick Lidstrom- there were a lot of rumors that he was going to retire. And Chris Chelios-he did retire, and now is a part of the front office is a position yet to be determined.

Who We Lost: Andreas Lilja, Jason Williams, Brett Lebda, Kirk Maltby? And Steve Yzerman.

Detroit Red Wings

Coming off last years SCF hopes were high for the Red Wings. We lost a lot of depth over the summer with Hossa and Kopecky going to Chicago, Samuelsson to Vancouver, and Hudler to Russia. Chelios said he had more hockey to play in him but we let him go.

The season was going well... but then came injuries. As of Febuary 9th the Wings had 279 absences becuase of injuries.

The injury reserve list for the 12-23-09 game against Chicago for example: Lilja, Franzen, Filppula, Williams, Kronwall, Cleary, Zetterberg and Ericsson. During the winter most fans were unsure whether it was the Grand Rapid Griffiths they were watching on TV or the Wings. My Grandma kept complaining about how she didn't recognize any of the names on the roster because they were all guys called up from the AHL.

Add in that all-star Osgood was underpreforming which that led to a young Howard to step up to the job.

Wings fans... we don't like to lose. People flipped out and it looked like the Wings wouldn't make it to the playoffs.

But in the end the Wings managed to get healthy and grab a playoff spot. And like drama queens the Wings took it to 7 with the Coyotes, then lost to San Jose in 5. Unfortunately the Blackhawks did not get to play the one team that has their number (oh yeah, Franzen's looking at you Kane).

The Wings knew the best way to get over a dissappointing season was to put on an old-timey bathing suits and watch Zetterberg marry a Swedish model. So that's exactly what they did.

Team Captain: Nicklas Lidstrom

Player(s) everyone should love: Darren Helm. He plays with heart, isn't afraid to check and is always hustling. Justin Abdelkader: You may remember him as the leader in (fluky) goals for the first couple games in last years SCF. He's got a goofy name, is kind of goofy looking and is always ready to fight.

Player we don’t love: Brad Stuart. Please, just go far away. You're too much of a liability.

Who they got: Mike Modano! Thank Little Caesars pizza and Detroit radio for being the first to play his wife's gem of a song for his move. Detroit: the good looking older man retirement home of the NHL! We also signed Ruslan Salei to a 1 year deal.

*Who they got back that they never technically lost: Jiri Hudler is coming back after a year in Russia. Everyone feels a little awkward about his homecoming after last year's arbitration fiasco.

Who they lost: no one!

Located at: Joe Louis Arena. This may be the last year at the dear old Joe. So NHL fans make your pilgrimage to Detroit this year to experience the arena that truly captures the gloom, grit, depressing and working class nature of D-town.

Hotness level: 7

Zetterbergs hair had the most effect on this rating. When you get past the "old ginger" complex you'll be surprised to find that players like Kronwall, Filppula, Helm and Miller are a bit sexy. Jimmy Howard continues Detroit's trend with baby faced goalies. He's 26 but looks 12 and who can resist this face?
